Under current law, driver’s licenses are not available to those who don’t have legal status in the United States, which makes the undocumented immigrants not being able to get to work, drive their children to school, or run everyday errands.
Pursuant to the new Assembly Bill 60, The Safe and Responsible Driver Act (AB 60), beginning January 1, 2015, any eligible California resident will be able to apply for a driver’s license, regardless of immigration status! One catch, these driver’s licenses will have a visible distinguishing feature on them and cannot be used for certain federal purposes, such as to enter restricted areas of federal facilities.
